The best family breeds are definetelly both Labrador and Golden retriever, Bulldogs, Pugs or Beagles. On the other hand, guarding dogs must have different qualities. They must be brave and loyal, alert, trainable, courageous, smart, confident, reserved with strangers and they must be large. Great examples of guard dogs are Bullmastiffs, Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Akitas or German Shepherds.We are talking here about breed standards, every dog is unique and no one can guarantee you what temperament your dog will have.
